Look above the rotten timber
A split slate, leaking gutter joint or damaged underlay can keep one area of fascia wet while the rest remains sound.
Old underlay can form a trough
Sagging felt behind the fascia can collect rainwater and discharge it onto the back of the board.
Check the rafter ends when the fascia comes off
Replacing the visible board alone can hide decay in the timber that actually supports the roof edge.
